Weezer

With 2005's "Make Believe", Weezer solidified their place in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. With the very tough task of following up such a great album, Weezer returns with the self titled "red" album.

Is it Weezer's greatest album to date? No. But it does contain some classic Weezer.  The lead off single "Pork And Beans" is what this band is all about, as well as the infectious "Troublemaker".  "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" is about 20 different songs squished into 5 minutes.  The album closer, the 6 minute plus "The Angel and The One" is Yes meets Brian Wilson, and Weezer pulls it off effortlessly.

They really haven't made a bad album (I doubt they can), and even when they are not at their best, it is still miles above 97% of the music made on the planet.

Note:All of the tracks in rotation on Popbang Radio were taken from the excellent red vinyl copy of the new album.  More and more great music is being released on vinyl, and it is such a better music listening experience!

Popbang Radio's SINGLE OF THE WEEK...

Glen Campbell "Times Like These" What do Jellyfish's Roger Manning Jr and Jason Falkner, Cheap Trick's Robin Zander and Rick Nielson and The Revolution's Wendy Melvoin have in common in 2008?  They all helped make "Meet Glen Campbell", the new album from this former Beach Boy and legendary country/pop artist.  On his new album, Glen and company tackle songs from Green Day, U2, Tom Petty, Travis, The Replacements, and this wonderful cover of Foo Fighters.  Thankfully, this is not a novelty album (i.e. Pat Boone's metal album), and the 72 year old Glen Campbell hasn't missed a beat after all these years.    No worries, Popbang Radio is not becoming Poptwang Radio; this is not really a country album at all... rather, it's a very welcome return to a great artist, and power pop at it's finest.

More new music on Popbang Radio...

Ben Folds "Hiroshima/You Don't Know Me"  Ben Folds returns after the mostly mellow album "Songs For Silverman" with 2008's "Way To Normal".   It sounds like Ben is back to his rockin the suburbs ways.   The new album is out this fall, and the anticipation is high, but not as high as the expectations.  I personally can't wait to hear the whole album, and if it is half as good as these two new cuts, it looks to be Ben Folds best album yet.

Enuff Z'nuff "High"  Absolutely, without question, and arguably the single most underrated band ever (just ask Rolling Stone magazine),  Enuff Z'nuff returns this fall with a new full length album called "Dissonance".  If this new track is any indication of what is to come, this should be the best album from them since 2000's "10".   "High" rocks with Stone Temple Pilot's intensity, and Cheap Trick's melodic power.  Lead singer Donnie Vie sounds rejuvinated after an extended absence from the band, and mainstay Chip Z'nuff lends his patented bass line to the song, making it classic Enuff Z'nuff.   Currently touring with a killer lineup that includes CJ Szuter (The Szuters, Magna-fi) and Randi Scott (Supermint, The Black Mollys), Enuff Z'nuff is one of the world's best power pop bands of the past 20 years and this is a very welcome return.

fORMER "Lies"   What an impressive list of influences - The Beatles, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, Badfinger, Enuff Z'nuff - the list goes on.  Nashville's Former could be (and should be) signed to a major label in a heartbeat and heard all over the place.  Ultra-catchy tunes, 3-part harmonies, and pristine (but not overdone) production match up with a lot of talent in the band to create one of the hottest debut bands of the year.   Excellent stuff!

Rick Springfield "What's Victoria's Secret" Rick's first single off his latest album has HIT written all over it.  Following the formula that made "Jessie's Girl" a smash, this song is Rick at his best.  Catchy hooks and totally rocked out is what Rick does best.  It is amazing what a loyal fan base this guy has, and he is one amazing rock and roll star.  As a writer, performer, and overall artist, very few can reach the levels of excellence that Rick Springfield can do when he is on top of his game, like he is now.

Chris Difford "Fat as a Fiddle" As half of the songwriting team for the legendary Squeeze, Chris Difford has always had a knack for writing a catchy tune.  This track off his latest "The Second Coming of Chris" is about as catchy as it gets.  His voice in unmistakable, and the song is in prime Squeeze form.  Really excellent stuff!

The Major Labels "Aquavia" A great name for a MAJOR band.  The Major Labels are Bleu, Mike Viola (The Candy Butchers), and Ducky Carlisle.   Self described as an adventurous mix of authentic 60's/70's AM radio.McCartney, Nilsson, XTC, 10CC etc...  that is exactly what this band is.  Anything that Bleu touches is gold, and one listen of "Aquavia" proves that he has struck it once again.

Foreigner "Too Late"  When I was a teenager, Foreigner was one of those bands that I HAD to have every single album they made the day it came out.  That was... until they became stuck into making power ballads for a living.  Lou Gramm is long gone from the band, but the new lead singer is rock solid as a sound-a-like.  In fact, I think Mick Jones is the only remaining member.  But who cares... this sounds like Foreigner should sound like in 2008, and it is extremely well done.

Extreme "Star"  The band that is best known for the 90's ballad "More Than Words" is back with their 5th studio album, and their first since 1995.   Extreme's music is hard to classify, but their heart is in the power of Queen and the pop touches of the Beatles, with the funk rock of Prince.  If you haven't checked out this band in the past, now might be the time to hear what you have been missing.  This is 100% really great hook filled melodic power pop, and a very welcomed return to an awesome band!

Owen Sartori "Go On"  Twin Citie's Owen Sartori, formally of a couple of great bands (Push, A Band Called Delicious) strikes out on his own with a killer bunch of hook filled songs on his solo debut!  "Go On" rocks just as hard and with just as much melody as anything on "Rockin The Suburbs", and fans of Ben Folds, Jason Falkner, and a cooler Jason Mraz will completely eat this up!  An excellent debut, and for sure to be on many a "best of" lists for 2008.

The Breakups  "Feed" A side project (?), or perhaps a main project for Edison Gower's Jake Gideon, The Breakup's "Eat Your Heart Out" EP is a small yet generous helping of well crafted harmony filled melodic power pop!  From the infectious hooks of "Day In The Sun" to the Cheap Trick-ish "Feed", this EP leaves a listener looking forward to a full length CD in the very near future.  Impressive from the very first listen, and gets better and better with multiple listens.  Excellent!
